Useful Tips To Help You Select An Interesting Term Paper Topic

Term papers are always important for completing a course, and are common in courses such as literature, philosophy, and history. Term papers can be a burden, but if you pick the right topic, it can be fun. But how to find the right topic does take some work. Finding the right topic will help not only you, but also the person reading it, because they know you really put your heart into it.

Find a topic you have a sincere interest in studying

This should not be very difficult. If you are writing on a subject such as history, and the focus on the American Revolution, if you have an interest in Bunker Hill, then by all means do it. If Bunker Hill has been analyzed so many times, perhaps choose something different, not only for you, but the teacher may have an interest in reading something that has not been done, such as “Could the American Revolution been peacefully avoided?”. This is something, that anyone who loves history would want to read, and it can make for a challenging paper, but also very rewarding. When doing something different, this will set you apart from most students, and can lead to your teacher-writing letters of recommendation.

Find reliable sources from credible authors

There are many sources out there, but many are not credible. This can be the case when one does research online. It is important that when looking for sources, you find out what you can about the author. What books have the author written, what are the reviews, and is the author trying to prove an argument, or elaborate on a certain subject. This is important if the topic is history, where many use history to prove arguments, and this can be the case across the spectrum. If you look at some books by the author, who has promoted the book, that will be an indicator on what viewpoint the author is coming from, and that is not a bad thing, but it will put the paper into perspective. It is also important to look at the bibliography, if it is thick that is very good, if it is not, approach with caution.

Have the topic be one where you can argue your points effectively

If it is history, and you disagree with the author’s premise, do not attack the author personally, the same can be said for philosophy, and literature. You must have your knowledge of the topic be solid enough, that you can back up your arguments effectively, and not just argue with rhetoric.
